Deccan Odyssey is the second luxury train to run in India. It came after the big success of the Palace on Wheels. This train was started as a joint project between the Maharashtra Tourism Department and Indian Railways. Its first journey began on 16 January 2004.
The Deccan Odyssey is often compared to famous trains like the Venice Simplon Orient Express and The Blue Train in South Africa. That’s because it offers top-level comfort and services on board.
So, what makes this train so special and luxurious? Let’s take a look at the main features that give the Deccan Odyssey its five-star feel.
Guest Cabins Inspired by Deccan Royalty
The Deccan Odyssey has 12 guest coaches that reflect the royal style of old Deccan kingdoms. Out of these, 10 coaches have luxury suites with a total of 40 cabins, and 2 coaches have Presidential Suites with 4 cabins in total.
Each coach is named after a former royal dynasty from the Deccan region. The design and look of every coach match the art and style of the dynasty it is named after, giving guests a real feel of royal history.
Dining on the Deccan Odyssey
The Deccan Odyssey has two restaurants on board – Peshwa I and Peshwa II. Both offer a mix of Indian, Continental, and Oriental dishes, giving guests many choices to enjoy.
The meals are served by stewards dressed in traditional Maharashtrian clothes, adding a touch of local culture to the dining experience. The food is not just tasty but also served with warm hospitality.
Bar and Lounge on Board
The Deccan Odyssey has a bar called Mumbai Hi, which is stocked with some of the best Indian and international wines and spirits.
There’s also a comfortable lounge area where guests can relax, enjoy their drinks, and have friendly chats with fellow travellers. It’s a great place to unwind after a day of sightseeing.
Conference Car
The Deccan Odyssey also has a conference coach with space for 30 people. It comes with modern facilities to support meetings, small events, or business discussions while you’re on the move.
Wellness and Fitness on the Move
The Deccan Odyssey has a fitness suite on board, so guests can keep up with their daily exercise routine during the journey.
There are also steam baths and Ayurvedic body massages available, which help guests relax and feel refreshed—both in body and mind.
